TWO teams, Egremont and Stanley Rangers, have applied for membership of the National Conference, the British Amateur Rugby League Association's flagship league, which features York Acorn and Heworth.
Cumbrians Egremont were Conference champions in 1997-98 before withdrawing 12 months later due to problems caused by work commitments, while Stanley, from Wakefield, are hoping it's third time lucky having mounted unsuccessful bids in the last two years.
The Conference is currently operating with 41 teams, one fewer than the 42 needed to have 14 in each division.
There are 13 currently in division one, although that will become 14 next season as only two teams will be relegated this term with three promoted from division two.
Division two will operate with 13 teams next season, or a maximum of 14 dependent on how many applications and re-elections are successful. Final decisions will be made at the league's annual general meeting on May 16.
