York City boss Billy McEwan has called on the club's players to prove they are worth their wages in front of long-suffering home supporters tomorrow.

The Minstermen close their campaign at KitKat Crescent against relegated Farnborough, who won their first match in 26 attempts against Halifax on Tuesday night, and McEwan is demanding a winning end to a sorry campaign.

Only Forest Green Rovers have scored fewer home goals than City's 18 this season and only the bottom three clubs have won fewer games as hosts than the Minstermen's six triumphs.

McEwan said: "I am looking for a bit of honesty, commitment and professionalism because we have got fans that pay good money to come and watch York City Football Club. Those fans will hopefully carry on coming to support the club.

"Players and managers come and go but the fans always stay loyal and it's for them that I want the players to go out and earn their money. They get well paid and have got to put a good shift in.

"The supporters have been fantastic. They have stuck through the club through thick and thin and it's been a poor season by everybody's standards.

"We want a nice win to finish the season off then take stock. It won't be easy though because they have had a good result but if you get beaten by a team that's second bottom of the league you should be ashamed of yourselves. We have got to stop conceding stupid goals and finishing easy chances better."

City lie in 18th position going into their final match of the season and can only climb one place higher with a victory if Canvey Island lose at Forest Green.

McEwan believes the lowly standing marks a fair representation of the team's efforts, saying: "I think this season has been a culture shock for the directors, fans and everybody. There was a lot of optimism at the start of the season but league tables don't lie. You only have to look at how many points we have got."
