VETERAN pair Dave Thompson and Brian Williams steered RI Tuesday/Thursday 'C' to a surprise 7-2 win over Clifton 'B' in men's division three of the York Badminton League.
The golden oldies were in great form in taking all three rubbers for a total of 115-92.
Fulfordgate beat St John's 5-4 with Geoff Hepworth and Peter Wilkinson sealing victory with a 15-13, 15-13 win over J Nelson and Sun Yiming. Dave Dearsley and George Noble won three times for the student teachers.
Selby/Drax 'A' won 7-2 at Clifton 'B' in mixed one with Alison Dinsdale and Dave Hearn top-scoring with three wins for 103-63.
Clifton 'A' were taken to wire by York RI 'B' before winning 5-4. Sam Gardner and Emma Andrew won twice for RI but lost 10-15, 15-10, 10-15 to top Clifton pairing Karen Broster and Richard McIntosh.
Knavesmire had mixed fortunes in mixed two, beating Huntington 'A' 5-4 but being crushed 9-0 at Nestl Rowntree 'A'. Dave Brogden and Joy Wilson were the architects of the win against Huntington with a return of 108-86.
Sheriff Hutton could only field two pairings against Easingwold but still managed a 5-4 win. Jo Wade and Chris Schofield were the match-winners with a 92-57 return.
York RI Tuesday/Thursday 'A' suffered two 8-1 defeats in mixed three at the hands of Clifton 'C' and YUSC 'A'. Kate Wilson and Kevin Davison starred for Clifton 'C' with 90-22, while Ellen Mooney and Matt Hitchens picked up RI's consolation in both matches.
Pocklington 'B' scored a last rubber 5-4 home win over Selby Jubilee 'C' in mixed division five. Lynn Wilford and Francis Milivojevic took three Jubilee wins for a total of 90-30, but Barry Johnson and Lynn Sagar won the decisive battle against D Conway and Marion Wolforth.
In mixed five, Terry's lost 7-2 against Middlethorpe, whose Ann Oxley and Ian Thompson took three wins for 105-65. Terry's bounced back two days later with a 6-3 win over Selby/Drax 'C'. Pat Santin and Chris Smethurst had another good series for Terry's with 94-66.
