I DECIDED to visit the refurbished York Art Gallery but first decided to try its new caf.

You cannot miss this new venture - each of the three double doors opens straight on to the caf area.

This proved something of an inconvenience and I suspect in the depth of winter "the icy wind will blow".

The caf is named Hartleys - not after some long-forgotten artist but because it is run by the sandwich shop business of the same name on Lendal Bridge.

The caf is self service and a dual price list is displayed. Everything is cheaper if you decide to use the venue as a take-away.

Although I chose not to have the tomato and Wensleydale with oregano and thyme soup (£2.75), many customers seemed to be enjoying it.

I selected a bacon, brie and cranberry sandwich (£2.95) which was in a sealed packet. It did not state the contents nor was there a date on it. With a scone, jam and clotted cream (£2.65) plus a pot of tea (£1.65, I retreated to a table.

From there I looked out on to the fountain and the west towers of York Minster.

The food was fresh and tasty. The menu indicated the cakes were local and the scones came from Harrogate.

There are about 30 seats. Furniture is modern, in keeping with the smart new appearance of the gallery, but not the old masters on display.

On reflection this was quite expensive compared with other venues. Coffee and hot chocolate were priced up to £2.75 depending on variety.

The two staff members were efficient and quick to clear tables, rotating this task and maybe sharing the marigold gloves!

As for the artwork? I marvelled at the stitch work on the quilts. Some, but not all of the paintings were to my liking.
