City of York Council tells us it is short of money. My wife and I browse through Newgate Market most days of the week and a third of the stalls are often vacant.
Presumably the market manager's job is to promote Newgate to existing and potential stallholders, but his efforts appear to be falling way below acceptable targets. Empty stalls suggest dissatisfaction with facilities and stall fees.
Great efforts seem to be focused on the special event markets in Parliament Street, especially Continental clients. Do such stallholders pay higher fees for the privilege of a pitch in Parliament Street or do Newgate stallholders' fees subsidise these events?
Our Newgate stallholders should be given the chance to attend a market on the Continent on a reciprocal like-for-like financial basis.
Our council should promote Newgate Market, giving preferential conditions to regular stallholders and trying to attract new business and give it equal status with Parliament Street.
Newgate is the bread and butter of the market trade. Parliament Street is not.
