NOW the Straylands scheme has been stopped, for the present at least, would it not be an opportune time to look at alternatives?
With more developments scheduled for Monks Cross, the traffic situation in that area will only get worse.
The Straylands Grove junction with Malton Road will become an accident blackspot with a cycle track and two vehicle lanes in the city centre direction subject to a 40mph speed limit.
Directing traffic along to the roundabout at the Stockton Lane/Mill Lane junction is only adding to city centre congestion, especially when a significant amount of the traffic is destined for Monks Cross.
Would it not be possible to build a new road between the A1036, (Malton Road) and Stockton Lane?
I suggest that the road has a roundabout at the A1036 junction and is located at the Hopgrove side of the present Monks Cross roundabout so as not to interfere with the Park & Ride bus service.
The road should have separate cycle tracks.
Finance for the road itself could come from planning gain from the office developments still to take place.
Central Government may well be persuaded to contribute to the cycle tracks.
