MY, these Wainwrights are busy. Brother Rufus is all flourishing extravagance, mother Kate has an album out, as does dad Loudon.
Now Martha steps out of the curdled shadow with this astonishing debut, adding to the family story of rivalry and resentment, love and loathing. There are some great songs, from the gentle, wistful Far Away to the grandstanding Factory.
This Life flirts with suicide, while Ball & Chain summons up unwanted lust, wandering hands and all.
Martha mixes her family's folk roots with her own fiery, doubting independence to produce music that rings with raw life, never more so than on Bloody Mother F****** A**hole, a spittle-flecked hymn to the father who left when she was young. Now that is angry.
