HOUSE buyers in York are being offered a slice of city life into the bargain.
Purchasers with estate agents Carter Jonas over the coming year will be given a year's free membership of York Civic Trust if their house lies within the city.
The trust, which aims to preserve the city's architectural and cultural heritage, offers a wide programme of events for members, such as lectures, admission to the trust's museum and visits to period homes of special interest.
Peter Brown, secretary of York Civic Trust, which is seeking to double its membership, said: "This gesture by Carter Jonas gives people buying homes in York a really super chance to become involved in the life of the community."
Carter Jonas director Edward Waterson said: "We sell many of the finest houses in the city and are very committed to preserving York's special character. We hope all these purchasers will go on to become long term members of York Civic Trust."
The trust was founded in 1946 and helped establish the University of York. It has bought and restored several important buildings - most notably 18th century Fairfax House.
