Heworth 'A' gave a brave performance but went down 25-12 to Yorkshire League division three leaders Castleford Lock Lane 'A'.
Lock Lane went ahead early and, after Heworth, led by Sam Clarke and Chris Varley, came back strongly only to be denied by resolute defence, they increased their lead to 14-0 at the break.
That advantage was upped to 20-0 before Heworth staged a decent fight-back. Veteran Chris Hammerton chipped over the defence to touch down and Steve Barnard crashed over, and with Gary Watkinson's two goals, a shock turnaround was on the cards. However, the visitors hung on and added two late penalties and a drop goal to seal the win.
For Heworth, Phil Marwood, Paul Gill and Ben Eastwood worked hard and were well supported by Lee Clayton and Mike Welch.
York Acorn Under-13s were unlucky in losing 34-22 to league leaders Hunslet Warriors.
Acorn tries came from Tyler Dawson (2), Josh Peacock and Stuart Leeke, with Antony Chilton adding three goals, but despite excellent displays particularly from Dawson, Josh Mortimer, Leeke, Chilton, James Mountford and man of the match Peacock, the visitors held on to win.
New Earswick U11s beat a big Stanley Rangers side 24-0.
Strong defence was the key to the victory with three try-saving tackles by Jake Cunningham-Evans, who also scored a late try. Other tries came from Andrew Scriven, Liam Davidson and Jacob Maddison, while Mikey Wharram kicked four goals.
