APPARENTLY reader Terry Smith thinks that it would be a good idea for Nexus to expand its operation into the derelict supermarket, doubling the club's capacity to more than 1,400 people (Letters, March 31).

For someone who does not live in the area that is a very easy thing to say but, if you are one of the many residents affected by the crowds of drunk people coming out of the clubs in the early hours of the morning, you would have a different viewpoint.

I have lived in the area for five years and have witnessed the deterioration of late-night behaviour in George Hudson Street and Tanner Row.

As residents we have to suffer noise, fighting and drunken vandalism to properties and cars.

Late night takeaways which stay open until after 3am (without permission) add to the problems in the area.

The police cannot cope after a certain time - they simply do not have the manpower in the early hours of the morning and this is why so many incidents go unresolved.

There is no adequate CCTV coverage - in most cities there are enough cameras and they are monitored by the police, but not in York. Tanner Row and North Street do not have a single camera and these are the most problematic streets in the city.

There should be no expansion to the nightlife in the area of Nexus until the city can cope with what is already happening and that is unlikely under this council.
