I write in response to Mr K Chapman of South Drive, Harrogate, (Letters, March 28).
Mr Chapman needs to be reminded that in the last 12 months all crime has reduced by 11 per cent and the detection rate has increased from 28 per cent to 36 per cent.
In real terms this means that there have been 1,194 fewer reported crimes in the Harrogate District and we have detected an extra 415.
The overall number of burglaries has reduced by 25 per cent and vehicle-related crime by a staggering 43 per cent.
This represents real progress in the policing of the Harrogate District, which is mirrored throughout North Yorkshire and the City of York.
My staff and partnership organisations are pleased with the progress that has been made in the past year and have the overwhelming support of the majority of the communities we serve.
They will not be deterred and de-motivated by the type of comments made by Mr Chapman and will continue to strive to improve our performance.
Chief Insp Richard Spedding,
Harrogate District Commander,
Harrogate Police Station,
North Park Road,
Harrogate.
