YORK'S Big Wheel saga has taken a dramatic new twist with an 11th hour offer to site the attraction in a different location.
World Tourist Attractions was deciding yesterday whether to press ahead with plans for the observation wheel in gardens near the Moat House Hotel, in North Street, when the company received a phone call.
Spokesman Elliott Hall said a private company told them it had been following WTA's difficulties in finding a suitable site for the London Eye-style wheel in the Press, and would like to offer its land.
WTA had now deferred a decision and would come to York next week to view the site.
He would not identify the company nor the potential site, other than to say it was a "few minutes' walk" from the city centre and near an existing tourist attraction.
WTA's first application, to site the wheel in Tower Gardens, was withdrawn following objections from residents and conservationists.
