SUPER-fit granddad John Beisly rows 2,000 metres, cycles six miles and swims 15 lengths - before most of us have even got out of bed.

The pensioner, from Osprey Close, Acomb, was given a surprise party to celebrate his 80th birthday at the gym in Edmund Wilson Swimming Pool where he completes the gruelling work-out five days a week.

Staff and other keep-fit fanatics presented John with a cake decorated with his membership card and hung balloons on all his favourite gym equipment.

Widower John, who starts his workout at 7am after walking to the baths, has been using the pool for more than 13 years and the gym for five years.

He has three daughters and eight grandchildren.

"I got some great gifts and all the girls gave me a kiss," said John, who pays £27 a month for his membership.

"When I walked into the gym they gave me a big cheer.

"I've always been really into sport and I will keep going for as long as I can. My advice to older people is to stay focused and make a habit of going to the gym. I don't drink or smoke.

"I need to stay fit for my grandchildren - they think I'm great."

John's fitness regime also includes a full circuit of the gym equipment, including the leg curls, rowing machine, cycling machine and weights.

He said he would be celebrating his birthday with his family at home.

Ian McCoulough, facilities development manager at the pool, said: "We really wanted to do something special for John to celebrate his birthday.

"He has been a committed and loyal customer to Edmund Wilson so it was really nice to give him something back."
