YORK is playing host to its first-ever Bavarian Festival, which will see all kinds of themed activities and attractions taking place in Parliament Street from until April 17.
Residents and visitors to the city may have already noticed the wooden beerhouse that has been shipped over from Bavaria especially for the event.
The council has secured a special licence that will enable those visiting the attraction to enjoy a beer in the open air in Parliament Street for the first time. There will also be a number of wooden chalets nearby, which will be selling Bavarian drinks and produce, as well as traditional Bavarian-style music and entertainment.
Stallholders will wear traditional dress and cook food over charcoal on a traditional Bavarian swing grill.
The festival will be open from 11am until 10pm daily, and is thought to be the first event of its kind in the country. Representatives of other local authorities will be attending the event. City centre manager Paul Barrett said: "The festival is definitely a first for York, and will be quite unusual as it will literally bring the sights, sounds and smells of Bavaria to the streets of York.
"It will be very much a family event, with attractions for children as well as their parents, and, because it is staying open until 10pm each day, should also be a welcome boost for the evening economy."
