WHATEVER the time of year there should be something to see at Harlow Carr.
Or if horticulture is not your idea of a day out you can still access refreshments without paying an entrance fee.
We were greeted on arrival and asked if we would like "The full Bettys experience" or sit in the coffee shop.
We chose the latter and were shown to a window table overlooking the gardens.
This large airy venue was understandably busy. The weather was kind and conducive to wandering round the gardens, which are under Royal Horticultural Society management.
The cafe on the other hand was decidedly Bettys.
It is partially self service. Each numbered table has its own menu.
This shows coffee at £1.95 to £4 depending on type and blend speciality.
Sandwiches and rolls are £3 to £4.50, cakes and patisserie £1.70 to £2.60 and scones/fancies £1.70 - £2.60.
Selection is made at the counter. This can be fatal because that is where the whole range of mouth-watering cream cakes can be viewed.
We made our selection. For Ann, an open sandwich with prawns and a garnish. For me, a mozzarella, tomato and basil roll. We paid for the order and took the food back to the table.
In due course our drinks arrived. Ann was absolutely delighted with the hot chocolate (£2.50) that had a good creamy head. For me, the pot of Yorkshire tea (£1.95) and hot water provided five cups.
So for less than £12.50 we had enjoyed a quality snack in attractive surroundings. Customers were coming and going all the time and tables meticulously cleaned at each departure.
What does the 'full Bettys experience' involve? We'll have to leave that for our next visit.
