THERE was an enjoyable concert by York Symphony Orchestra recently at the Jack Lyons Concert Hall at York University.
It began with a rousing overture by Weber, followed by Haydn's Oxford Symphony, from his later period. This work has a lovely adagio, which features a contrasting middle section in the minor key with trumpets and drums.
Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony is described as "being in the dark key of F minor", but it was the lighter moments like the fast pizzicato of the Scherzo I found more enjoyable.
My first links with the orchestra were when several members popped into my local after rehearsals and I always recommended the latest house ale to them. So they, in turn, recommended a good concert.
