I WRITE regarding your article on the advantages and disadvantages of road humps.
I have found, to my cost, that far from being a road safety feature they are a danger to drivers and can cause serious damage to vehicles.
During the week I work in York and have to negotiate the speed bumps in Acomb. I noticed that my steering was pulling to one side. Upon having it checked I was told that my wheels were misaligned. Every few months the same thing would happen, and when the garage checked my alignment it was out by quite a considerable margin. During periods where I was working elsewhere (with no speed bumps) the alignment remained unchanged.
Some may say that my speed was obviously too excessive over the bumps. However it only takes one bill for wheel alignment to bring about very slow driving over these bumps.
Worse was to come. After one trip through Acomb I found that my radiator had scraped on a high bump. This caused a huge headache and expense including a tow across the country by the RAC and the cost of a replacement car (£4,000).
In short, speed bumps do not get my vote, and I am still considering whether to sue the council for implementing this road hazard.
