ALONG with thousands of other households in the City of York Council area we have just received our 2005/06 council tax bill.
In the glossy information booklet it states that less than 13 per cent of household waste is recycled or composted.
Why, then, does the council persist in sending out these bills in non-biodegradeable plastic wrapping? It should be using recycled paper envelopes with a window for the name and address. Self-seal are probably just as quick because of the process of sealing the plastic, so no time wasted there.
The same applies to every company which sends out their numerous brochures enclosed in plastic, which, apart from any other consideration, is extremely difficult to open.
Paper will rot, plastic won't.
Where recycling is concerned, the council should lead by example.
