York City boss Billy McEwan has pointed out that a donation to save the reserve team could also save the careers of some of the club's younger players.
McEwan has appealed to local businessmen to help raise £10,000 to ensure the continuation of the reserve team beyond the end of this season.
That target will need to be reached before April 21 and £1,000 has already been donated by David Nicholson and Robert Beaumont Associates.
McEwan has admitted that a decision on whether the club runs a reserve team could influence his opinion on the future of young players who will be out of contract at the end of the season.
Without the reserves, McEwan will lose a vital component in monitoring the development of junior players and, with the first team the main priority, City might have to sacrifice certain youngsters to bring in experienced professionals.
The City boss said: "It is absolutely fantastic that Robert and David have put their names forward and contributed to the future of York City Football Club and I hope that more local businesses will follow suit.
"A figure like £500 is a lot of money but it is very much appreciated and I'm sure the young boys who are currently knocking on my door and sweating over their futures will appreciate it too."
Added the City boss: "It's a concerning time for those whose contracts are up.
"I am looking at my budget and I have got to see if we can afford a few kids because I need players to come through at first-team level and without the reserves that might be difficult.
"Whether we have a reserve team next season effects their future because I need to be as successful as I can within the framework of this football club."
McEwan has called on local businesses to donate £500 towards the bid to keep City's reserve team but smaller and larger contributions would also be welcome.
