INTERNATIONAL tumbler Glenn Smith inspired students at a York school to have a go at gymnastics yesterday by demonstrating just some of the things he can do.
A week of sessions in and around the York area sprung to life yesterday as the renowned floor specialist led year 7, year 8 and some year 9 pupils through techniques from forward and backward rolls to one-handed cartwheels.
His visit was part of the Get Fit Kids scheme which aims to promote exercise and fitness in youngsters with world-class gymnasts leading the way.
Schools encourage friends and parents to sponsor students to have a go, and the money is split between the organisation to cover travel and certificate costs, with the remainder going to the school. Lowfield are planning to install water dispensers for students for after PE lessons with the spare cash.
Lowfield School sports co-ordinator Allyson Rae also put the organisation in touch with primary schools in the vicinity, and Smith was going to Poppleton Road Primary School today, Woodthorpe Primary on Thursday and Rufforth Primary on Friday afternoon.
