IT seems as though City of York Council works in mysterious ways, especially when it comes to wasting taxpayers' money. Why does it need to install a rising bollard in Stonebow for the few vehicles which dodge the one already there?
It should be put in St Saviourgate where the problem is worse.
Several times last year I had to use taxis from St Saviourgate. While waiting in the queue I noticed the number of cars and vans whipping down the street. I mentioned it to the taxi driver and said that because of the bollard, people were using it as a rat run.
The next time I waited for a taxi, one Friday afternoon, I again counted the number of vehicles. On the first occasion I saw 38 during my 40-minute wait then 19 vehicles in 25 minutes.
If ever there was a need for a rising bollard, it is on St Saviourgate. Let the police put up a camera and a notice to deter anyone who drives on the wrong side of the road: dodging the bollards, or any other misdemeanour, will be captured on camera leading to fines and penalty points.
