IN 1962 I worked for Austin Reed in London. To reward the loyalty of the staff the company would allow members from the various branches I the big cities to represent them on board the original Cunard Liners, Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth.
In May that year I had the pleasure of meeting David Spellman, who was then based at the York or the Leeds branch of Austin Reed.
Together we manned the first class shop and cabin class on board the Queen Mary on one of their regular fortnightly trips from Southampton to New York. It was a chance of a lifetime for an all expenses trip paid which included spending money.
I often glance at the souvenir brochure and memories come flooding back of that trip: the experience of seeing New York, Broadway, Radio City and West Side Story etc.
