FOR years, they had lain dormant. York's double yellow lines slept quietly on the same old streets, only bothering the occasional van driver.
Then one frightening day last summer they awoke. Overnight the lines spread across the city. Street after street fell under their control: Duncombe Place, Lendal, Piccadilly...
Motorists fled in panic as the yellow lines' henchmen, known as traffic wardens, enforced the new order.
Then came the fightback. Thousands massed behind our Stop The Highway Robbery campaign. Suddenly the seemingly invincible power of the yellow lines began to fade.
Now they are to be beaten back to their proper place.
Victory is ours!
