THE Evening Press is constantly blowing its own trumpet about the building of a flyover at Bilbrough Top.

One consequence of the roadworks was a traffic prohibition order for through traffic down Catterton Lane. One Saturday, from 9am to 2.30pm, there was a constant stream of traffic at a rate of between 500 and 600 vehicles an hour.

I presume the Evening Press is quite happy to accept the blame for this appalling violation of the traffic regulations.

Traffic control cars regularly sit at the end of Catterton Lane and one can only presume they have been instructed not to enforce the law.

If that is so, the imposition of the prohibition order is the most cynical and dishonest edict to come out of local government in my lifetime.

Residents of Catterton are livid at being virtually confined to their homes unless they wish to go with the flow. To go against the stream is almost impossible because the roads are too narrow, for the most part, for two cars to pass.

Given the speed at which these vehicles approach the blind corners in the village it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs.
