IT shouldn't come as a shock that York is "grinding to a halt" (March 2).

When more roads are being closed off to through traffic, and all vehicles are being channelled along the same routes, there is bound to be congestion - and, of course, the "counting by numbers" on certain roads will show a massive increase.

If drivers were left to find the most suitable, quickest route for their journey, these major road usage figures would not be so high, congestion and pollution would be cut, tempers would not be frayed and the rush hour would be over much quicker.

So why do people choose to use their cars? From what I see and read about the public transport, it is inadequate for their needs.

Park and Ride is all right for visitors who probably just want a wander around York. But those with shopping to do and time budgets need to be able to put their buys in the car boot and return to the shops at will.

Buses need to go where and when people want them, not where the company decides it can make more money. Maybe a few mini-buses should be available on less profitable routes.
