THE police take a lot of flak, and it is easy to fall for the line that "there is never an officer around when you need one".

But as our report on the police commendations proves, many people have every reason to be grateful there was an officer on hand to help.

These are stories of great courage and compassion. Time and again, North Yorkshire policemen and women step in to dangerous, frightening situations without a thought for their own safety.

We must add our congratulations and thanks to all those deservedly honoured today.
