IN reply to Derek Martin (Letters, March 3), council staff and councillors do not receive up to 50p a mile for using cars to drive to and from work.
They get 40p a mile for low mileage and this reduces substantially for higher annual mileages. This is based on costs of car ownership calculated by the AA and the Inland Revenue.
Furthermore, there is no payment to staff for mileage between home and work, only for use of the car for work purposes while at work.
While I'm always happy to correct mistakes relating council finances made by letter writers, I am equally happy to provide such information direct to any citizen who contacts me, without the need to involve the Evening Press.
