TEN concerts of music of our time and a farewell to The Lindsays are the cornerstones of next month's York Late Music Festival at the National Centre for Early Music.

The festival opens next Friday evening with the classical Indian music of Isher Bhachu, sitar, Rajvir Singh Bhachu, tabla, and Soumik Dutta, tabla.

Nicholas Ponsillo conducts Vamos! in next Saturday's programme of emerging and established modern composers: Philip Glass's Metamorphosis 2, Peter Maxwell Davies's The Kestrel Paced Around The Sun, Stephen Montague's Paramell VI and Michael Torke's Sprite.

Black Hair return to the festival with soprano Anna Myatt on March 6 to perform Pierre Boulez's Derive 1 and Judith Weir's The Consolation Of Scholarship. Boulez's 80th birthday is marked by Quatuor Parisii's concert of his Livre pour Quatuor pieces, interspersed with Bach fugues, on March 8.

The Anglo-Canadian Trio of British jazz pianist Nikki Iles and Canadians Duncan Hopkins, on double bass, and Anthony Mitchell, on drums, pay homage to George and Ira Gershwin, Bill Evans and John Taylor on March 10, when promoting their Everything I Love album.

On their farewell tour, The Lindsays mark the centenary of Sir Michael Tippett's birth by playing his first and fifth quartets on March 12.

The latter piece was written for the Lindsays, with whom Tippett worked closely. Tippett's Five Spirituals from A Child Of Our Time complements 16th and 17th choral music in the Micklegate Singers' concert on March 13.

In week three, on March 17, Trio Phoenix and soprano Alison Smart present premieres of new works by Ana Sokolovic, Annelies van Parys and festival artistic director David Power alongside chansons by Ravel and Debussy. On March 19, pianist Ian Pace marks Sir Harrison Birtwistle's 70th birthday by playing the technically demanding Harrison's Clocks and also showcases new work by Richard Barrett and festival administrator Steve Crowther.

Lesley Schatzberger, clarinet, Gina McCormack, violin, and Shelagh Sutherland, piano, close the festival with Stravinsky, Janacek and Bartok works on March 20.

All concerts start at 7.30pm. Box office and brochures: 01904 658338.
