I FULLY agree with everything Darrell Buttery of the York Civic trust said about the proposed big wheel on the site opposite Clifford's Tower (February 18).
When we first read about it, friends and family assumed it was some sort of try-on to test the water. Surely, planning permission couldn't even be considered for such a construction, whether permanent or temporary, so close to the historic centre of York?
Now we are actually worried it may be allowed.
Lately it seems the wishes of the people who live in historic towns are forever being sacrificed to the pressure of huge, private, money-making companies, in this case trying to turn York into a tourist trap rather than the fascinating and visitor-friendly city it has always been.
Why would the council agree to something that would spoil the appearance of some of the unique ancient monuments which make York such a loved city? The answer must be money in somebody's coffers, but not ours as residents.
Would our council tax be reduced because of all this proposed, wonderful, tourist revenue?
The wheel sounds really good; a piece of exciting technology. I should like to go on it myself - who wouldn't? But there are dozens of more suitable places for it. In York, the Knavesmire seems the obvious one.
