COUN Cuthbertson wrote that his party is committed to maximising the development of brownfield sites in York (February 14).
The Government issues planning policy guidance (PPG) on a variety of strategic subjects. The 13th PPG to be issued deals with land use and transportation.
The thrust of its advice is that new developments should be made in areas that are accessible by all forms of transport.
The effect has been to tip the balance in favour of developing brownfield sites eg York Central as a first choice, which would be easily reached by walking, cycling and public transport.
Car-dependant greenfield developments eg along the outer ring road, are deemed acceptable only as a last choice.
Our council's planning officers duly consider and report on the advice in the relevant PPGs to the planning committee of elected councillors. This advice will be the same, regardless of which party holds office.
All political parties in York are committed to maximising brownfield development, because the Government has told them to.
Paul Hepworth,
Windmill Rise,
York.
