AN Arctic wind proved the decisive factor as hosts Stocksbridge took advantage of the elements to beat York RI 24-10 in Yorkshire Three.
Stocksbridge won the toss and decided to play with the wind. Stand-off Martin Bye used his boot effectively to keep RI penned in their own half.
RI held out for 30 minutes but two tries in as many minutes, followed by a try and a penalty just before the break yielded a 24-0 half-time lead.
With the elements in their favour RI gradually dragged themselves back iand reduced the arrears with a penalty by Jones. They trimmed the deficit further when a break by Thomas was taken on by Humphries who drew his winger and passed to Hawkins who touched down under the posts, Jones converting.
But despite more pressure RI were kept at bay.
