BLUE Peter presenter Liz Barker proved to be a real smarty-pants during a visit to the Nestl Rowntree factory in York.

The children's television programme filmed in the Smarties section at the factory in Wigginton Road, as part of a piece on the city which was being screened today, at 5pm on BBC1.

Liz started off at the Product Technology Centre, taking part in a chocolate tasting session with help from the official tasting team led by sensory scientist, Dorothee Leopold.

The Blue Peter crew then filmed at the Smarties plant, where Liz gained hands on experience creating the coloured sweets.

Guided by Smarties production manager, Steve Blofled and Smarties brand manager Newby Groves, Liz helped at all stages of the process, from adding the colours, to mixing the Smarties together before heading down to packaging to film the final process.

A Nestl spokeswoman said: "Liz really enjoyed her visit and was fascinated by the whole Smarties production process - from the sheer volume of sweets we produce to the size of the plant."

"She was also obviously impressed by the Product Technology Centre and the scientific way the chocolate is tasted by the expert panelists."
