ACTS such as Dizzee Rascal and The Streets owe a huge debt to south London rapper Rodney Smith, aka Roots Manuva. His 2001 Mercury-nominated album Run Come Save Me inspired the flourishing UK hip hop and Grime scene - and now he's back to reap the rewards with a dub-fuelled classic.
As its title suggests, this record has depth and repeated listening should leave you stunned by Smith's lyrical eloquence and sophisticated production. It's a melting pot of everything from warped dancehall to melodic electronica, Roots preaching his gritty and humorous sermon while sonic bombs explode around him. There's not a duff moment; Move Ya Loin, Thinking, Awfully Deep and Colossal Insight could easily join Too Cold as singles.
