FELLOW riflemen: In 1944 I, along with many young men, was called to Fulford Barracks in York, or as it was then called 15 PTC (Primary Training Centre).
Many of those, including myself, had waited to be airmen with the RAFVR, but, when the call came for more soldiers, we were transferred to the Army.
The man in command at that time at 15 PTC was a very special commanding officer - Lt Col Vic Turner VC (won in battle in the Desert War) of The Rifle Brigade. I ended up with The Rifle Brigade too.
Some years ago I discovered there was a Yorkshire branch of the Rifle Brigade Association at Wakefield.
They are well established, meet every month at the RAFA Club in Wakefield. They organise other activities and welcome many more members, young and old.
If you are intereested call secretary Stuart Anderson on 01924 825091. The RAFA Club phone number is 01924 363489. Second World War veterans will be especially welcome, as will men who have served the country well, in Kenya, Malaya, Northern Ireland and elsewhere.
