R S SCRUTON'S letter about Walmgate Bar (January 31) was constructive and may be workable in practice, but I cannot agree with the suggestions made.
As a city we should be making a stand in certain cases and recognising the very special quality of certain buildings such as the Bar and protect them by setting them apart from modern traffic rather than trying to find a way to "fit in" with traffic passing through. It is a building of enormous historic importance and in many other towns and cities would be treated differently.
Similarly, as far as the "big wheel" planned for Tower Gardens is concerned, is it really such a good thing because it would "dwarf" Clifford's Tower and be as high as the Minster?
Would this not detract from the city's skyline on which the Minster imposes so majestically?
