A RECENT independently-conducted survey by the GMB union in Leeds and the surrounding villages and towns found areas with the highest youth spending also had fewer problems with crime and drug use.
Areas with outreach and youth workers, as well as activities and facilities aimed at young people, benefited significantly.
In the light of the reports of problems with young people in the Press, I should like to see a commitment by City of York Council to raise and maintain spending on youth programmes.
I do not think cutbacks in this area would be desirable and would have a long-term negative impact. School clubs and youth clubs should be a priority.
There is always a demand for punishment that regularly seems to pop up, but what we need is joined- up thinking.
