IT was very worthwhile attending the Derwenthorpe planning meeting to witness the birth of a new political force in York - the Liberal Hypocrites.
How councillors elected in May 2003 on the back of a manifesto that "opposes urban sprawl and building on green spaces", that "seeks to protect local wildlife as far as permitted", that goes on to state "we would fully integrate the potential of York Central into the local plan before taking into account residents' views on the use of any green fields for development", can pass their own scheme for the destruction of a 53-acre greenfield wildlife site, shows breathtaking hypocrisy.
It is worth noting the top priority for the Liberal Hypocrites in May 2003 was "Giving the city stable, responsible leadership based on the consent of its residents and focused on providing affordable, good quality services". How much consent is there among York residents for the destruction of greenfields at Osbaldwick, Heslington and Fulford, the trashing of historic buildings - Burton Croft, Laurens Manor - the imposition of parking taxes, the Barbican fiasco etc?
