STUDENTS at York College will get the chance to meet up for a Valentine's date with a difference on Monday.
February 14 marks the opening of a new social area, called Confab, at the college.
The new student area is equipped with vending machines, pool tables and a large projector screen and TV, as well as tables, chairs and comfortable sofas. It also houses the college's Students Union office.
To get everyone in the mood for Valentine's Day, students will be able to purchase red carnations, with proceeds going to Womens Aid, and there will be acoustic performances by two music technology students, Josh Overington and Sophie Stott.
To mark the occasion, there will be a large cake, provided by the college's Ashfield Restaurant.
Paul Abbott, student development officer, said: "We are learning how to improve the facilities for students.
"The new social space gives us the opportunity to be more adventurous with the type of events we organise and we are keen to involve all students.
It is important to build on the students' educational experience, and we want to provide a well-structured social aspect to student life too."
Confab is part of the £1 million refurbishment programme of the college's Tadcaster Road site where, for the next two years, all students will be located during work to demolish and rebuild the college's Sim Balk Lane site. The new college is due to open in September 2007.
