I NOTE that Mr Webster supports the re-opening of the Beverley to York railway line (Letters, January 19). I agree.
However, let me draw readers' attention to the appalling lack of support given by York's leading councillors to what could be a wonderful opportunity for the future of our city.
The re-opening of a direct rail route to expanding towns such as Stamford Bridge, Pocklington and Market Weighton could bring enormous benefit. Attempts to re-open the line should be supported.
Not only could congestion on the notorious Hull Road be reduced, but plans for a station at Monks Cross could reduce traffic on the Northern by-pass. With Monks Cross expanding it may also make it easier for shoppers and for staff recruitment.
The council seems to be able to find money for other less worthy schemes. This short-sighted attitude could do long term damage.
If the council had adopted the same approach in years gone by, we would not have seen the development of Park and Ride as well as other initiatives which have gained so many plaudits. I urge our councillors to urgently re-consider the matter.
Roger Farrington,
Ouseburn Avenue,
York.
