I REFER to the letter headed "It's a disgrace" (January 31). Mr Hughes has obviously been following with interest the case in Monkton Road. It's a pity that other residents have not.
As someone who has viewed the video on a number of occasions, I am unable to identify the offenders. However, I do feel sure someone in the local community can.
It's clear Mr Hughes thinks we are failing to tackle crime. I would just like to remind everyone of the role of the police, that is "to assist the public in policing themselves". So I would call on those people who either think or know who these persons are to do their duty and assist the police and bring to an end the misery of one local resident.
I think it is a disgrace that members of the public can sit back and allow this kind of behaviour to continue when they have information which could solve this crime.
I would call on some "public spirited" citizen to ring the police on 0845 60 60 247 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 and identify these individuals.
Andy Bell,
Chief Inspector,
North Yorkshire Police,
Fulford Road, York.
