It didn't come cheap, but the thank-you party for Rowntree's staff, including a live performance by Status Quo, proved to be a priceless way of boosting staff motivation.
Managing director Chris White even jammed with the Quo on stage. The band were impressed but effectively said: stick to making the chocolates.
A very happy workforce left York Racecourse on Saturday night. What a contrast with our story last week which revealed how owners Scottish & Newcastle punctured morale at John Smith's Brewery by axing the pensioners' free pints and social club.
