ANOTHER huge defensive effort allied to powerful forward play carried Harrogate to a 22-19 National League Two win, their first win on the road since September 11.

Just as in the victory over Wharfedale last week, they gave a fine all-round team effort against Blackheath, with the pack muscling their way forward at every opportunity and notching two tries from rolling mauls, both by outstanding Kiwi number eight Wiri Raihania.

He got Harrogate's first points within minutes of Blackheath having taken the lead through a Steve McCa-shin penalty. And after wing Paul Clayton had crossed for 'Gate's second try, Raihania was on the end of some more robust forward play for his second just before half-time.

Lee Cholewa converted one but McCashin added two penalties to keep Blackheath, who were outplayed up-front but dangerous in the backs, in the game.

They hit back after the restart with a converted try by prop Lee Brett and a penalty to go ahead.

Had it not been for a pair of glaring misses by McCashin they would have been further in front, but as it was the half-back's second wayward kick was to cost his side dear.

The ball rebounded from a post and led to a breakaway which took play into the home 22. The 'Gate pack drove on and when the ball was spun out, centre Matt Duncombe released winger James Tapster to score his tenth try of the season in his 100th league appearance for the club - and give his side a valuable bonus point.

Delighted coach Rhys Morgan singled out centre Jamie Barker and the pack for praise. However, neighbours Wharfedale did his side no favours in losing to Esher.
