Selby's miserable run in Yorkshire One continued with an inept performance and a 22-5 defeat at local rivals Goole.

With only one win from their last eight league fixtures, Selby gave their worst display of the season in a poor game between two poor sides.

Goole thus moved to within two points of Selby with a game in hand and, as well as taking the points, reclaimed the Tommy Burton Trophy.

Still, Selby actually climbed from ninth to eighth courtesy of Keighley's heavy defeat at leaders Beverley. However, all four teams below them have a game in hand.

Selby had looked in promising form early on, putting the home line under pressure, but Goole began to take control and James Ruhmann, who had missed an earlier effort, goaled three penalties late in the half to put them 9-0 up by the interval.

It was all Goole at that time, with Selby consistently taking the wrong options and messing up their passing and handling, problems that continued throughout the game.

They also lost prop Paul Gabel with a head cut which required hospital treatment.

The second half started with Goole still dominating, going further ahead as number eight Ollie White crashed over out wide.

Rich Topping came off the bench for his first appearance since Selby's draw at Ilkley last year, but the visitors fared little better.

However, they did start to make some headway after Goole hooker Simon Kellett was sin-binned for illegal use of the knee and a series of mauls from a lineout took them to the try line where hard-working number eight Duncan Phillips went over.

However, with Kellett back on, Goole again began to dominate with Ruhmann booting another penalty to make it 17-5.

Selby had a golden opportunity to reduce their arrears late on but replacement flanker Mark Rollinson was tackled having gone for the try himself rather than pass to hooker Shane Sellers, who had a clear route to the line.

Goole dominated thereafter particularly in the forwards, with winger Huw Davies gratefully receiving a poor Selby clearance kick and crossing in the corner to end the scoring.
