WITH all of the campaigns over signs, lampposts and CCTV blocking the view of the Minster, and the Coppergate scandal, I cannot believe that the thought would have ever crossed anyone's mind to install a 54-metre wheel.

It may very well work in Birmingham and Manchester and fit in with their more commercial landscape. York is an historic city - since when were these monster wheels historic?

Commercially it may be viable, but what about the additional congestion to the already congested roads? There will be more misery for York residents trying to get to and from anywhere with road closures and diversions while it is built.

It may assist the tourists to appreciate the beauty of York from a great height, but what do the residents benefit from?

Perhaps we could, in true theme-park tradition, get a one-hour head start in York for shopping and parking before the tourists are let in.

Will Clifford's Tower be receiving a P45?
