Alex Lloyd reports on a tsunami fund-raising event at Toffs in York this weekend.
FIVES Saves Lives is the message on Sunday when York's finest talents unite for a fund-raising festival of music.
For just a fiver, you can help victims of the tsunami tragedy and party into the wee hours at Toffs night-club.
The event is a collaboration between Access to Music and The Jam Factory. Jane Humphreys, of Access to Music, says it is the biggest line-up they have ever brought together.
Toffs' regular DJ and drag queen Pussy Galore will be providing the entertainment in the main room, with a guest appearance from ATOM DJs including Red Eye, Alex Holden and Ed Sagar, plus MC Soul Man. House collective Freakin will provide the entertainment in Room 2 with Rich Clark, Leo Clayton, PFunk, Jax and Mark Autumn.
Meanwhile, the upstairs lounge will have a packed line-up of top notch acoustic acts that I challenge you to recite without taking a breath: Chris Helme, The Stanleys, Monkey Business, Jess Gardham, The Accidental Tourists, Mr Parker, Customer 1000, The Cellars, Ava Hegarty, Side A, LoBo, Cara Mellor and Ali McKenzie-Wilcox. Rounding off the night will be covers band The Mothers.
"They are all doing quite short sets," said Jane. "The idea being to get as many great acts on as possible."
There will also be a raffle with prizes donated from local businesses, including music shop Rockola and hat maker Bootleg Bitch, as well as signed CDs from many of the acts.
Fives Saves Lives - tsunami benefit, Toffs night-club, Toft Green, York, 01904 620203. Sunday, 8pm to 2pm, £5.
THE MOTHERS will be busy on Sunday. They are also playing at Kennedy's Caf Bar, in Little Stonegate, which will be hosting the grand draw for the Asia Needs You - Tsunami Earthquake Appeal raffle.
The fund-raising initiative has been a united effort between many of York's bars and businesses, and all proceeds will go to the York Aid appeal. The draw will be at 10pm and there will also be a charity auction.
And remember - tickets, costing £1, will be on sale until Sunday afternoon at bars where you see the blue Asia Needs You posters.
