THE problems facing people deprived of dentistry care seem to be rousing the attention of the Government and the profession.
The Evening Press reports ten practices in the York and Selby Trust area have taken up new contracts which embody an obligation to provide NHS dental care (January 13).
I also read that negotiations with the dentists had been broken off, much to the disappointment of the Government.
The dentists have this basic health service and the Government in the palm of their hands. They can withhold their services at will, as they have shown without compunction.
It seems our local trusts have little say in the matter, except to carry out the resulting terms of an agreement, whenever and if ever one emerges.
We need separate and adequate NHS facilities free from the influence of commerce, as we have with doctors and hospitals, if only for children, students, the less well off and proud pensioners.
It would take time but it will be well worth waiting for a service deserving of pride, not shame.
