THE Evening Press today took its campaign to Get York Moving to a crucial meeting of highways bosses.
Copies of last night's Evening Press, with its uncompromising headline: York Cannot Take Much More Of This, were hand-delivered to officials arriving at the Highways Agency meeting in Leeds. Representatives of City of York Council, North Yorkshire County Council, traffic consultants and road building contractors, have been invited to the meeting to discuss ways of easing the congestion caused by the A64 roadworks at Copmanthorpe.
Roy Templeman, York's director of environment and development services, and Damon Copperthwaite, head of highway infrastructure, were intending to press the agency to introduce more lanes of traffic on the contraflow to reduce the jams and ease the consequent congestion on streets throughout the city.
The Evening Press was lobbying the meeting to support the council's call for extra lanes and to press for round the clock working on the Copmanthorpe site, so that the project can finish before the scheduled completion of next July.
Among those attending the meeting, which was expected to last all day, is David Phillips, who is in charge of the Copmanthorpe project.
He indicated to the Evening Press earlier this week that the agency may be willing to look into ways of improving traffic flow at the roadworks, possibly by introducing extra lanes.
