THE official notice of the proposed closure of the historic public right of way through the St Peter's School grounds has now been published by City of York Council.
We believe the crime-based evidence linked to the path which has been put forward to justify closure cannot be substantiated.
We also believe it was not properly considered by the committee which was so hurriedly convened by the council to consider this matter.
Nor has the school taken all the measures that could be taken to improve or maintain the security of its premises, which it is obliged to do before the closure of such an important right of way can be confirmed.
The school made the initial application for closure, and this has now been supported by the council, so that objectors have two major players to with which to contend.
This is why Clifton Path Action Group is pressing for the matter to go before an independent inspector at a public inquiry, where all the evidence can be properly evaluated and the applicants and the city council can be cross-examined.
We have to persuade the Secretary of State that such an inquiry is necessary.
We can only do this if there is strong public support for such a move.
All those who object to this proposed closure now have the opportunity to do so.
Objectors should write to The Acting Director of Environment and Developments Services, 9 St Leonard's Place, York YO1 7ET before February 25, stating the grounds of objection and requesting a public inquiry be held to consider the matter.
Philip Crowe,
Clifton Path Action Group,
Clifton, York.
