THE crux of the problem with the firework displays at the racecourse stands is the noise level of the mortar-shell types of fireworks used.
Such decibel peaks endanger the hearing and nervous systems of babies, small children, pets and wildlife. The sound levels are outrageous, and shake the foundations of houses anywhere within a one kilometre radius of the Knavesmire's stands.
The council has been presented with a petition from local residents which requests a limit be put on the varieties of fireworks used. It also requests the displays should not go on beyond 10pm, and residents should be told when displays are to take place. A nightly curfew is meaningless unless the noise levels are restricted.
Babies, dogs - one of which died of a heart attack during a racecourse fireworks display last year - cats, bats and birds do not wear ear-guards up until 10pm then take them off at night.
Now the council has considered the issue, its response is that as long as it happens before 10pm, you can generate whatever noise level you like. Who said the council is useless?
