JAZZ singer Carol Addy, who was reunited with her mother in Australia after 60 years, has now shown her the sights of York.

But Sheila Woods' visit to the UK nearly ended in tragedy when she suffered a heart attack after a family party.

The Evening Press previously reported the story of Carol, 59, from Broadway, Fulford, who was given up for adoption as a baby, but reunited with Sheila, 77, after more than half a century.

They met up at a hotel in Sydney harbour, overlooking the famous opera house.

Sheila recently made the long journey to York to stay with Carol and her husband, John.

They visited popular tourist spots and sung songs together as they both have a great love of music.

But while visiting other relatives in Norwich, Sheila suffered a heart attack and was admitted to hospital for a week.

"It was really scary, but she had very good treatment," said Carol.

"I would have felt dreadful if something had happened to her. It was very brave of her to come to York as she is not a well lady.

"She is really spunky and off the wall and what you call a bit of a free spirit."

Carol met more than a dozen of her relatives for the first time during Sheila's visit, including aunts, cousins and nieces.

They all met up for a huge knees-up at her Fulford home, where Carol's band played in the front room.

"We had a lovely time, but we really have to watch mum as she always wants to get up and dance," she said.

"She is just amazing and a really good singer. We speak on the phone at least twice a week now."

Carol took her mother to York Minster and the coast during her visit and she also tucked into Yorkshire pudding for the first time.

Meanwhile, Carol's music group, Finesse, is staging a gig at the Victoria Vaults pub, to raise money for the tsunami appeal on Wednesday, at 7.30pm.
